Day 4: Waltz
The waltz became popular in Vienna around 1780, and was considered shocking due to the way the partners touched one another while dancing. In fact, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the waltz was described as "riotous and indecent" as recently as 1825.Regardless, the dance caught on with the youth of the day and spread across Europe quickly. The waltz's closed position is now the commonly accepted stance for most formal couples dances.
Day 5: Swing
Swing music became popular during the 1930s. Oftentimes, woodwinds and brass instruments dominate the overall sound. It gets its name from the "see-saw," lilting rythym. Swing music can be performed at any tempo although it is commonly thought of a having a quick pace to allow for Swing Dancing.

Swing dance refers to dancing that combines a series of steps or moves and are generally performed to swing music. Like the Salsa, Swing steps are essentially combinations of the Lindy Hop and the Charleston from the 1920s and African tribal dance steps. Swing dancing became popular in clubs in Harlem during the 1930s and has never lost its wide appeal.
Hip Hop
Just like Swing dancing, Hip Hop dance evolved due to a shift in music during the 1970s. With the advent and popularity of rap and other hip hop music, listeners began to develop their own style of dance including breaking, popping, and locking. TV shows like Soul Train features this new dance style and brought it to the attention of the youth of the entire nation.
By the 1980's formal dance companies could no longer ignore this new form of dance. Hip Hop moves became choreographed and were practiced in formal dance studios. Today, hip hop dance is unique in that it is one of the only forms of dance to be practiced both in a traditional dance studio and on the street.

Salsa
Salsa dancing originated in New York in the mid-1970s. It evolved from earlier dance forms such as Son, Son Montuno, Cuban Cha Cha Cha and Cuban Mambo which were popular in Cuba and other parts of Latin America at the time.
Why is it called the Salsa?
Some say the musicians shouted the word while they were playing. Others believe that the term was created as a marketing ploy, choosing the word because of its spicy and hot connotations. Still others believe the term came about because salsa dancing and music is a mixture of different styles, just like salsa is a mixture of different ingredients.
